Woodworking Jigs

Woodworking Jigs For Mistake Free Woodworking!

Woodworking Jigs Drawer PullWhen you think of woodworking you think of highly skilled professionals taking woodworkers plans and building beautiful projects of wood. Woodworkers needs to work with precision or mistakes can happen, and sometimes a mistake can screw up the piece that you may have put a lot of time on. Some of these mistakes can come when you need to make several exact parts for a project, and you make them all a little bit different from each other, not that each part doesn’t look good. So to keep this from happening we make use of woodworking jigs. You can either make a jig that you need or there are many companies that make woodworking jigs which you can purchase, the choice is yours.

Woodworking jigs are tools which in essence will help us make anything that need to be done repeatedly. You are a good woodworker so each part looks fine, but they might not be exactly the same size so you end up with a table that you have to put a book of matches under the leg to keep it from rocking. Well not if you start by making a jig, and use it to make all of your legs, this way they have to be the same. Woodworking jigs, even today with all the automated tools that are around, still are very popular. Why, because they are cheap, you can make a woodworking jig from your scrap wood in most cases. Even if you decide to buy a woodworking jig, it will still be a lot cheaper than buying an automated machine. For the small or hobby woodworker, using the tools that we have and employing  jigs to make our tools more effient just makes more sense.

Woodworking Jigs For Cutting Dovetails.

You can make woodworking jigs for a lot of different tasks. Like for cutting dovetails, to make drawers. Without a jig it would be very hard to make all the cuts to just do one drawer, think about if you needed to make several drawers, for your project. I have woodworking jigs for dowelling, it is almost impossible to drill holes in two pieces of wood that you want to join together without one. Woodworking jigs for cutting wood to special shapes like arches, or curves for chairs. Jigs for drilling holes, for cutting miters on special cut pieces, jigs for the table saw, jigs for the band saw, no matter what tool you are working with a jig will help you be better.

Most of the woodworking jigs that I use the most have to do with the router. The router is a very handy tool, you can get bits to do almost anything, but without a jig of some sort to guide the router straight, the tool is useless in most cases. With a router and a jig even someone new to woodworking can put a perfect artistic edge on their table top, or put perfectly straight flutes in a piece of wood trim.

Woodworking Jigs Let The Not So Skilled Shine!

Woodworking jigs have always and will always be a very valuable tool for the woodworker. They are cheap to make and they make it possible for the not so skilled to make perfect straight cuts. If every time you find the need for a jig you make a good sturdy one, you will be able to use it over and over and might not ever have to make it again. Even though I make most of the woodworking jigs that I use there is a few that I have purchased and they are great.

Build Your Own Woodworking Jigs This Book Can Help.

Woodworking Jigs BookIf making your own woodworking jigs is the way you want to go, I recommend you check out Taunton’s Complete Illustrated Guide to Jigs & Fixtures by Sandor Nagyszalanczy.  This book is what its title suggests, illustrated guide to shop-made and woodworking jigs that are available commercially.  Woodworkers can either build the jig exactly as shown or modify it to suit a wide variety of purposes. Jigs are like clamps. As the saying goes, “You can never have enough of them.” Believe it or not,  there are woodworkers that love jig-making so much, that is all they build. Anyway this is a great book to have around your shop.

One of my all time favorite projects to build is adirondack furniture.  Every spring I build up some pieces to sale. When I first started doing this I made some jigs to make all the repetitive work go faster. As good as my jigs worked I found this video on You Tube of a jig for making the curved support brackets at the back  that was much better than the way I was doing it. This has made making these curved brackets on the adirondack chair so much more accurate and also faster. I thought you might like to see this video, it is a very good example of a woodworking jig and why they are so popular.

Woodworking jigs in some cases can be as fun and hard to make as the woodworking projects that we use them on. Wasn’t that video great, I am telling you if you want to make a adirondack chair you need to make and use that jig, know it will save you a lot of time. If you like what you saw here leave a message, would love to hear what you think. Oh and if you like to build a lot of different woodworking projects you will need woodworking plans for those projects. I use to buy my plans one at a time from WoodcraftPlans.com, then I found Ted’s Woodworking.com and purchased the complete program, now I have access to 16,000 woodworking plans and they are very complete. If you want to find out more about just click on the Ted’s Woodworking and enjoy.
